The Master of Disguise: Understanding and Catching Tripletail

Finding the right fish in the Gulf can sometimes feel like a game of hide-and-seek. But for those in the know, one of the most rewarding targets is the tripletail fish. These prehistoric-looking predators are masters of disguise, often found drifting near the surface like a piece of old wood. Whether you are new to the area or a seasoned pro, triple tail fishing offers a unique challenge that combines sharp eyesight with precision casting.

How to Catch Tripletail in Clearwater, Florida

In Clearwater, we are lucky to have some of the best nearshore waters for this species. Spotting a tripletail is one thing—convincing it to bite is another. At Wish Upon A Fish Charters, we’ve spent years perfecting the art of the approach, and we’re here to help you do the same.

What Is a Tripletail?

If you’ve ever seen a dark, mottled shape floating sideways near a channel marker and wondered, "what is triple tail?", you aren't alone.

The tripletail (Lobotes surinamensis) gets its name from its unusual dorsal and anal fins, which sit far back on its body, making it appear as though it has three tails. They are famous for their "laziness," floating on their sides to mimic debris or shadows. This isn't just for rest; it’s a brilliant ambush strategy. They wait for small shrimp or baitfish to seek shelter under them, only to strike with surprising speed.

Best Bait for Tripletail

Tripletail are opportunistic, but they can be surprisingly picky if your presentation isn't right.

  • Live Shrimp: This is the gold standard. A medium-sized live shrimp, free-lined or under a popping cork, is almost impossible for them to resist.
  • Small Crabs: Fiddler crabs or quarter-sized blue crabs are natural snacks for tripletail hanging around structure.
  • Artificial Lures: If you prefer lures, a 3-inch plastic shrimp (like a Gulp! or DOA) worked slowly past their nose often does the trick.
  • The Secret: Always cast past the fish and let the current carry your bait toward them. If you plop it right on their head, they’ll dive deep and the game is over.

Where to Find Tripletail Near Clearwater

In Clearwater, tripletail are most active from spring through fall when the water is warm. Look for them in these key areas:

  • Crab Trap Lines: This is the most popular way to find them. Cruise the lines of crab buoys a few miles off Clearwater Beach.
  • Channel Markers: Large green and red markers provide the shade and structure these fish love.
  • Floating Debris: Anything from a discarded bucket to a patch of sargassum grass can hold a trophy-sized tripletail.
  • Clearwater Pass: Occasionally, they’ll drift right through the pass and into the Intracoastal on a strong incoming tide.

There is nothing quite like the sight of a 15-pound tripletail inhaling your bait just feet from the boat. They are incredible fighters and even better on the dinner table, with white, flaky meat that rivals grouper.

At Wish Upon A Fish Charters, we specialize in these sight-fishing adventures. We have the towers and the local knowledge to spot the fish you might miss and the gear to help you land them.

Don't leave your big catch to chance. Join us on the water and see why Clearwater is a premier destination for this unique species.
